A sunny North Lodge Park was the venue for the SPFL Trust Trophy 2nd Round fixture which saw a development Aberdeen side take on Peterhead.

The first chance of the game went Peterhead’s way in the ninth minute after a nice Cruyff turn, Peterhead’s Robert Wards was able to get a shot away that was in the end blocked by the Aberdeen back line.

Aberdeen managed to open the scoring in the 18th minute after a brilliant outside of the foot through ball from Findlay Marshall found Alfie Stewart perfectly in his stride. Stewart was able to calmly slot the ball past ex Don Blessing Oluyemi in the Peterhead goal.

Only three minutes later the Dons were on the attack again, this time down the right wing with Marshall who managed to get the ball across the face of goal to pick out Alfie Bavidge, however the striker’s header went over the bar.

Peterhead had a free kick in the 38th minute which was taken by Joe McKee. His free-kick was well struck but it was well managed and caught by Aberdeen goalie Tom Ritchie.

Only a minute later it was the Dons turn to attack. A good cross was fired in and met the head of Blair McKenzie. His looping effort looked as though it would be going over the head of Oluyemi however, he was able to pull off a spellbinding save to tap the effort onto the crossbar.

Going in at the break the Dons had the advantage. Peterhead were playing to their strengths with lots of crosses into their tall attackers.

Half-Time: Aberdeen 1-0 Peterhead

Early into the second half, in the 50th minute, Peterhead had a free-kick. The high looping ball came in from McGee and was met by the head of Scott Ross who headed his effort into the ground and past Richie to draw the away side level.

Peterhead continued their attacks in the 55th minute as Robert Ward picked the ball up and twisted and turned past Jack Milne and managed to get a shot away. Ward’s shot rattled off the post and was cleared away by Milne.

Only a minute later Aberdeen forward Bavidge was in on goal and got cleared out by Oluyemi resulting in a penalty. The penalty, taken by Bavidge was coolly converted down the middle to give the Dons the lead for the second time in the game.

Peterhead managed to get the game back to level in the 58th minute after a ball over the back line found Andrew McCarthy who was able to side foot the ball past Ritchie and into the bottom left corner.

Aberdeen gained the lead for a third time in the 71st minute when Stewart crossed a corner kick to the head of Findlay Marshall. His header was nearly stopped by Oluyemi but he wasn’t able to get a strong enough hand on the ball.

Aberdeen nearly extended their lead after a mix up with the Peterhead back line in the 75th minute. A free kick taken by Stewart was sent over to the head of Rhys Williams. His header was then headed into the air and over Oluyemi by the Peterhead defender. Luckily for Peterhead the ball went over the bar.

Peterhead managed to get the game back to level for a third time in the 77th minute after Jordon Brown collected the ball inside the box and hit a powerful shot through the legs of the Aberdeen defender which flew past Ritchie.

Only a minute later Peterhead gained the lead after some nice passing from Jordon Brown and his teammate. Brown managed to curl a shot over Ritchie and into the net, his second of the game.

Peterhead extended their lead going into the closing stages of the game. A good cross from the Peterhead midfielder was met by the head of Kieran Shanks who headed the ball past Ritchie and into the goal making it 5-3.
