Played on a heavy and muddy pitch, free-scoring Hibs took a two goal lead before the struggling Dons got into the game and despite recent form ended up swamping the visitors. Footage of this game is available on the RedTV archive and is well worth a look, despite a grainy picture. The game was played almost entirely on the ground and the referee allowed it to flow, keeping it moving fast by not getting bogged down in precise placement of free kicks and even, on occasion, fielding the ball himself to keep the game on the move.
"TONIC
The game only minutes old and Hibs two goals in the lead! Dons' supporters might have been excused for showing disappointment. Instead they manifested their real loyalty by cheering on their team. And how the Dons responded! We hear that the "Pittodrie Roar" could be heard all over the city. That may be something of an exaggeration, but it's a long time since we heard such sustained vocal support. There were many good goals. Both sides showed touches of class. Altogether, it was a most satisfying afternoon."
