Hibernian 0 - 5 Aberdeen

A crowd of just short of 13,000, mostly Aberdeen supporters, flocked to Easter Road to see the closing stages of the title race. The Dons, who at one stage were 11 points adrift of Celtic, now required a maximum of 3 points from their two remaining matches to achieve success. Right from the start, Aberdeen put Hibernian, and debutant goalkeeper Dave Huggins in particular, under pressure and after several encouraging moves they made the vital breakthrough. McMaster took a quick free kick in the 23rd minute and Steve Archibald latched onto it in a flash to direct an accurate header past Huggins.
With the Dons' Red Army of fans still celebrating Andy Watson popped in No. 2 to ensure a carnival atmosphere on the visitors' terracing. The second half was like an exhibition match with Aberdeen in complete control. Indeed Bobby Clark kept himself busy by continually getting the up to date scoreline from Celtic's match from the fans behind the goal.
Further strikes by Ian Scanlon (twice) and a fabulous solo effort by McGhee ensured an emphatic result. With the Dons' fans celebrating in the glorious sunshine, news filtered through that Celtic had a last minute penalty claim denied at Love Street, and had thus dropped a vital point. Aberdeen were now officially champions and the players', fans' and officials' reaction at the final whistle was one of sheer joy. Fergie ran half the length of the field to embrace veteran goalkeeper Bobby Clark as Easter Road witnessed many emotional moments in a significant day in the club's history.
