Scanlon cut a mercurial figure on the pitch and frequently created exciting moments for the crowd, but he could also drift out of games. Nonetheless he was a significant contributor to the Dons' teams of the late 1970's and played a big part in the League Championship winning season of 1979-1980. In 1979, USA club Washington Diplomats came close to making a £100,000 bid for the player, who was wanting away from Pittodrie, but nothing came of it. Eventually he signed for St Mirren in the summer of 1981 as part of the deal that brought Peter Weir to Aberdeen.
