Willie turned out as a trialist for Aberdeen 'A' against Hibernian 'A' at Pittodrie on Christmas Eve in 1949. Despite the 1-0 defeat his display on the right wing was 'distinctly promising'. In fact so promising was he that he was signed on provisional forms on 30th December 1949. He made his debut as an Aberdeen player for the 'A' side against East Stirlingshire on 14th January 1950 in a 0-0 draw and had an uninspired debut against Hunt the robust former Falkirk full back. His next outing against Dundee United 'A' in March saw him setup the first goal and score the second in a 2-2 draw. He came to prominence more at the end of the season playing twice in a week against both Brechin City and in the Caledonia Trophy against the Highland League Select. At the end of April 1950 it was announced that Willie had been re-signed for the coming season but despite being the only outside right on the books it was noted that he was not yet ready for first team football. Willie turned out in the first trial game of the season in August. Unfortunately the arrival from Queens Park of Alan Boyd meant that Willie struggled to make an appearance for the reserve side for the 1950-51 season. He was freed by the club in April 1951 and moved south to try his luck at Hartlepools United.
