Scored on his debut peacetime appearance against Hearts. Ernie had all the assets required for a centre forward of the day nippy, excellent distribution and a powerful shot. He turned out for the Dons as a guest between August 1944 & February 1945 playing 20 games and scoring 29 goals including four against both East Fife and Hearts. He had previously appeared for Hall & Co scoring 45 goals in 13 matches. It was however his penalty style that most spectators of the day remembered, standing sideways to the goal and close to the ball, he simply glided the ball into the net. Manager David Halliday would sign Ernie permanently in November 1946 but a combination of illness and more accomplished fellow players saw him fail to reach the heights of goalscoring of his wartime season.
