Everyone at Pittodrie was desolate to learn of the death of former player Steve Gray at the age of 42.

Steve Gray - A look back at his career

It was back in the days when Aberdeen were winning league titles that the young Steve Gray forced his way into the Aberdeen side that was dominating Scottish football through the eighties. Gray was one of the few rising stars who made it into the Aberdeen side, following on from such as John Hewitt, Neale Cooper, Neil Simpson and Eric Black.

Born in Glasgow on 7th February 1967, Steve hailed from Irvine in Ayrshire and supported Kilmarnock as a youngster. He joined Aberdeen in 1983 from Kilmarnock Boys Club as one of the endless line of youngsters from the west of Scotland who were brought north to join up at Pittodrie where they knew there was a great chance of making it into first team football. After some promising games for the young Aberdeen side, Gray made his first team debut for the Dons against St Johnstone in a League Cup tie at Muirton Park in a 2-0 win on 28th August 1985. It was Alex Ferguson who saw great potential in the youngster who was already an Under 18 regular in the Scotland set up. He would also go on to represent Scotland at Under 21 level. Later that season Steve came on as a substitute in the Skol League Cup Final at Hampden as Aberdeen defeated Hibernian 3-0; Ferguson's only League Cup success at the club.

Stevie Gray went on to play 50 competitive matches for Aberdeen before being sold to Airdrie in 1988. Steve returned to the northeast some time later and played a big part in the Huntly success in the Highland League in the 1990's.
