John Newton was born on 26th February 1915 at 21 Wallace Street Dumbarton. He first registered as a professional football player with Kirkintilloch Rob Roy for the season 1935-36 then moved to Aberdeen FC for the season 1937-38. The following season he returned to his home town to play for Dumbarton FC but returned to Aberdeen for his marraige to Roberta Pont on 5 December 1938 (John Knox Church, Mounthooly, Aberdeen). He remained in Dumbarton until 1942 where he continued to play for Dumbarton but also worked at the local aircraft factory. Both his sons were born in Dumbarton. The family then moved back to Aberdeen in 1942 where John worked at the John Lewis & Son Shipyard as a welders tally clerk until his death (he collapsed and died in Victoria Road Bowling Green) on 1st June 1968. Both his sons and three grandchildren still live in Aberdeen to this day.
